A Crooked Path by Annette Smith

About A Crooked Path:

Abandoned by his father when he was a boy, Manny Ortega has made the journey from Mexico to Texas to find work and support his family. Now in his midthirties, Manny works at the Eden Plain cattle ranch for Owen Green, a cranky, prejudiced man who suffers from a chronic illness. Yet over time, Owen and Manny forge a relationship that mirrors a father and son.

But their friendship is strained by the arrival of Owen's daughter, Chaney, as she and Manny fall in love. Their growing relationship reveals Owen's deeply hidden issues involving race and class, while a tragic accident threatens to shatter any hope of reconciliation.

Can the relationship be restored before it's too late and Manny loses yet another father?

My thoughts:

I was greatly anticipating this book, as I really enjoyed Annette Smith's first book in the Eden Plain series, A Bigger Life. This book was certainly worth the wait. Annette has such a mastery of the male point-of-view and I was thoroughly drawn into Manny's heart - experiencing his emotions right along with him. A Crooked Path will make you both laugh and cry, but most of all it will make you want to miss sleep to finish it. I'm not sure what Annette has coming out next, but if these two Eden Plain novels are any indication, it will be a book you won't want to miss.
